THE NAME

According to Hindu mythology, the name Dandeli is believed to have been taken from the mythological forest of Dandakaranya. Another legend has it that the name Dandeli was adopted from the local deity Dandelappa, who lost his life in the name of loyalty to his masters, the Mirashi landlords.

THE CITY AND ITS DEMOGRAPHY

Dandeli, the town, is situated at an elevation of 1551 feet above sea level and receives good rainfall in the backdrop of the western ghats. The city has a population of just 53,000 (as per the 2001 census), and males constitute 51 per cent of the populace. At 74 per cent, the literacy rate is higher than the national average Dandeli.

The city also houses many migrant workers from all over India. Migrants from the north Indian states of Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, and Madhya Pradesh moved to this industrial town to look for a livelihood, as this quaint town is known for paper mills. Kannada, Hindi, Marathi, and Konkani are also widely spoken in Dandeli. No wonder many term the city a "Mini India."
